Welcome to Get-E.org

Enlightenment DR 17 is a next-generation window manager for UNIX operating systems. It is currently in a pre-alpha stage and is under heavy development. A fairly large community already uses the development version from CVS on a daily basis though. Note that E17 is not officially supported at this stage, but people are free to try it out of course, but the standard disclaimers for pre-alpha software apply.

What we are

Welcome to the E17 users' portal. This site aims to provide high quality eyecandy for your e17 desktop experience.
We're trying to keep all content up to date, but sometimes we may not be able to keep up with the E17 development - some content may be outdated every now and then. Please take a look around and enjoy the stay.

Major documentation changes - Valtteri "vrln" Vainikka [All my articles] (Mon, 14 Nov 2005 22:26:17 +0000)

As you might have noticed, our user guide hadn't been updated for a long time. The reason for this, among other things, was that we wanted to rewrite several large sections. The new user guide has now been uploaded. Actually there are two guides now:

  • E17 User Guide - this is about E17, and E17 only. In other words all other EFL based applications will not be mentioned at all in this guide.
  • EFL User Guide - this is about all non-E17 EFL programs.

Why the change? There are several reasons:

  • Now everything is easier to manage.
  • Now everything should be a lot clearer and easier to read. The old guide had some pretty confusing sections, mostly because it tried an "all in one" approach.
  • There is a pretty severe stability contrast between E17 itself and most other EFL based applications. Now the guide should be easier to read for those who just want to try E17, and nothing else. This, for example, makes the installation section a lot simpler, as there are nowhere near as many dependencies as the old guide used to mention (the old guide simply said that these are not really all E17 dependencies, but all these need to be installed if you wish to be able to compile everything mention in the guide).
  • It's now easier for people to start with E17, and then optionally install the additional EFL libraries and programs based on them.

The old guide is still currently online under "Legacy". It will stay as long as we have confirmed that we've moved everything over correctly to the new guide. The new updated (and mostly rewritten) E17 user guide is under "English". The English EFL user guide can also be seen in the menu now.

Needless to say, these new guides are very new and have not gone through as much proof-reading as the previous ones have during all these months. Thus there may be errors that we didn't manage to catch. If you see something that should be fixed (or just have some feedback), please drop me an email. Please also note that these guides are not 100% complete, but close enough to bring to the public (the user guide we used to have was starting to be horribly outdated). We will continue working on these guides - for example the file management (EFM) section is not done yet.

Last but not least, the guides are actually a bit too up to date right now:

  • If you are wondering what the control panel screenshots are, well, those are preliminary screenshots from the upcoming control panel that isn't in CVS yet. Please don't mind those - they are simply included as a small preview of what's to come (the look etc may still change before it is committed though).
  • The package e_utils is not mentioned in these guides anymore. The eventual plan all along during the E17 development was to replace e_utils with internal E17 tools - these are currently being worked on and should be usable soon. In other words we are a bit too up to date in this regard, but this is good for the long term, since the guide structure is already in place for upcoming future changes.
  • The package e_modules is also not mentioned anymore, since we now host these modules as individual packages.
  • All translations are outdated now, but we will keep them online for some time. We have added additional disclaimers to the pages to mark them as being outdated. In other words the English guides are the only up to date ones right now, but this will soon change of course.
